Shields are items used to block attacks, preventing them from damaging the player. Skillful use of shields can empower the player's spells and attacks, making them a central element in both defense and offense.
Shields have an associated Shield Health (ShldHP) statistic that represents the maximum amount of damage they can take before breaking. The damage shields take is affected by the player's defense stat, and can be further reduced through Perfect Guards.
Shield Mechanics[]
Shield Regeneration[]
Shields regenerate their health based on the player's current situation:
- While the shield is raised, it will start regenerating health after 2 seconds since last attack blocked
- If the shield is lowered, recovery time is capped to 0.2 seconds
- If the shield is broken, recovery will start after 3.83 seconds (230 frames)
Shields will regenerate 18% (of Max Shield HP) + 1.2 (flat) Shield HP per second normally. While broken, they will gain an additional 33% of Max Shield HP per second to the repair rate, totalling at 51% + 1.2 Shield HP pr second.
Shield Break[]
If a shield's HP goes below 0, it will break. This will cause the player to be knocked back, and lose the ability to guard until the shield repairs fully. It takes approximately 6 seconds for the player to recover from a shield break.
After a shield break, the player gains invincibility for about a second (enough to protect them for the knockback animation):
- If the player's shield is destroyed by an attack that crushes shields, the player gains 0.83 seconds (50 frames) of invincibility
- If the player's shield breaks after a blocked attack, the player gains 1 seconds of invincibility
- If the player's shield breaks after a Perfect Guarded attack, the player gains 1.16 (70 frames) of invincibility
The invincibility frames can also be used to avoid certain attacks, such as some of Cursed Priestess's fan patterns, though care should be taken not to get hit just as the invincibility ends.
Perfect Guard[]
If shielding right before an attack, a Perfect Guard will occur. This will cause the shield to take 67% less damage from that attack, and the player will gain Perfect Stance for 1.5 seconds. If the player is using a Crystal Shield, an additonal 80% reduction is applied on top of that.
If used, Perfect Stance will empower the player's next action:
- Basic Attacks are guaranteed to Critically Hit, and will gain a 50 ASPD bonus
- Skill Charges will start at Silver Level, provided the player has enough EP
Perfect Guards will also trigger any Talents, such as Riposte, Snap Cast, Efficient Counter, and others.
